"Hippo"
The “Holga Forays” Series
A “Holga” is a medium
format toy camera complete with distorting plastic “optics” and light
leaks. It is also known as a
“krappy” camera. There are two schools of thought among Holga
enthusiasts; School 1 – remove the plastic insert and invite maximum
distortion and fogging for the kind of images that require patience and
imagination to understand what is actually there, and, School 2 – leave
the insert in and practice conventional exposure and printing for the
clearest images possible (from a plastic lens.)
I am of the School 2 persuasion.
After many years of learning how to make images look “right” it
goes against my grain to allow distortion and overexposure.
I use my particular Holga as a divining rod leading me to oddities
such as those found in vintage miniature golf venues and cement yard
statuary businesses. “Stop
the car! It’s a Holga moment” is the declaration used in such
situations. These bizarre
scenes can really, only, be interpreted through the lens of a Holga.
My silver gelatin prints are
derived from 120mm negatives, processed to archival standards and
selectively hand colored with oils and pencils.
